Average 401(k) match

Computed from the audit reports attached to Form 5500 filings, once enough match formulas have been reviewed by a person.

We compute the average once at least 30 employers have a fixed formula that a person has reviewed against the filing. So far: 0. Machine-read formulas are not averaged.

How we calculate it

The maximum match is what an employer adds, as a percent of pay, if you defer enough to get all of it: 100% of the first 3% plus 50% of the next 2% is 4%. We use each employer's latest human-reviewed formula from its largest plan. Discretionary matches and caps stated in dollars or as a share of the IRS limit are excluded because they can't be expressed as a percent of pay. The sample is the employers reviewed so far, mostly large plans, so it is not a random sample of all US employers. See the ranked list and our methodology.
